McILROY WINS IN BRISBANE - 04 March 2006Anna boyle began her outdoor preparations for the Commonwealth Games at Olympic Park, Melbourne on Thursday evening. Strong breezes meant sprint times were slow at the venue in the shadow of the MCG. In front of a packed grandstand Anna led for a long time before finishing fifth in 11.81secs.
James McIlroy continued his build-up to the commonwealth games with an impressive victory at the Telstra 'a' series meet in Brisbane. Taken through the bell in sub 51 seconds in what can only be desribed as typical British Isles summer conditions. James came through to win in 1m48.09 seconds, holding off amongst others Gary Read of Canada, one of the pre-games favourites.
James will now return to his training base in Sydney for final preparations before the games. At Boxhill in Melbourne Zoe Brown vaulted a seasons best of 4m10 for third place in a quality pole vault competition. Zoe had a marginal first time failure at 4m20 and was beaten by one of the pre games favourites Stephanie McCann (canada) and Irie Hill (England). Zoe's next competition will be at Boxhill on tuesday week. The other five NI athletes should be in action in Bendigo on the 12th March at a pre-games meeting.
